U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly today released the following statement after the announcement that the Clarksville Police Department (CPD) received federal grant funding from the U.S. Department of Justices Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Program. The award will allow CPD to hire two new police officers. Donnelly sent a letter supporting the CPDs grant application to the U.S. Department of Justice earlier this year.\r\nDonnelly said, Public safety is a top priority in Clarksville. While long-term strategies to prevent crime will require everyone from law enforcement to public officials, educators and employers to work together, ensuring law enforcement has the resources needed to keep our communities safe is a critical step.\r\nMark Palmer, Chief of Police for Clarksville Police Department, said, I would like thank Senator Donnelly for his continuous support towards law enforcement. This grant was an important funding for additional police officers, the letter and support Senator Donnelly gave us during our application is greatly appreciated.\r\nDylan Fisher, Associate Planner & Grant Writer at Clarksville Planning & Zoning Department, said, The Town of Clarksville Police Department will add two additional full-time officers after being awarded $250,000 through the 2015 COPS Hiring Grant Program. The new officers will be used to address disproportionate policing levels between Clarksville's commercial and residential districts. The Town of Clarksville is highly appreciative of Senator Joe Donnelly's efforts in securing this grant for our community. Clarksville Officials' believe the future work of the new officers will strengthen the relationship between the local residents and Police Department.\r\nThe COPS Hiring Program is designed to advance public safety through community policing by addressing the full-time sworn officer needs of state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies nationwide. The program provides funds directly to law enforcement agencies to hire new or rehire career law enforcement officers and to increase their community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts.\r\nFor more information on how Senator Donnellys office can assist cities, municipalities, and groups applying for federal grants, please visit https://www.donnelly.senate.gov/help/grants.\r\n###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.donnelly.senate.gov/newsroom/press/donnelly-welcomes-cops-hiring-program-grant-for-clarksville-police-department"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.939899055287242, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
