{"database": "press", "table": "releases", "rows": [["https://www.donnelly.senate.gov/newsroom/press/senate-passes-donnelly-coats-bill-the-alicia-dawn-koehl-respect-for-national-cemeteries-act", "Senate Passes Donnelly-Coats Bill, the Alicia Dawn Koehl Respect for National Cemeteries Act", "2013-11-18", "2013", "2013-11", "Democrat", "House", "IN", "Joe Donnelly", "D000607", "www.donnelly.senate.gov", null, null, "legacy", "Senate Passes Donnelly-Coats Bill, the Alicia Dawn Koehl Respect for National Cemeteries Act\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\tMonday, November 18, 2013\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tWashington, D.C.\u00a0\u2013 The Senate tonight unanimously passed legislation introduced by Indiana\u2019s U.S. Senators Joe Donnelly and Dan Coats, the\u00a0Alicia Dawn Koehl Respect for National Cemeteries Act.\r\n\u201cI thank my colleagues for passing\u00a0the\u00a0Alicia Dawn Koehl Respect for National Cemeteries Act,\u201d said Donnelly.\u00a0 \u201cMy office has worked with the Koehl family on this legislation for many months, and I know this action will provide relief to the Koehl family and a solution to tragic circumstances.\u00a0 It will also preserve one of our nation\u2019s greatest honors \u2013 being buried in a veterans\u2019 cemetery.\u00a0 I urge the House to move quickly to pass this bipartisan bill into law.\u201d\r\nThe bill would give the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the U.S. Department of the Army the authority to disinter veterans buried in national cemeteries who committed a Federal or State capital crime.\u00a0 Current statute prohibits burying veterans who committed a Federal or State capital crime, but does not allow the VA or Army to correct a mistake that has been made.\u00a0 Under the legislation, the VA would have the authority it needs to exhume the remains of Michael LeShawn Anderson, a veteran who shot and killed Indianapolis resident Alicia Dawn Koehl last year before committing suicide.
