Instead the Senate majority rejected the House-passed amendments to the continuing resolution on a strict party-line vote. A partial shutdown of the federal government will begin at midnight if no agreement over funding is reached. The Senate did, however, unanimously pass a bill to ensure our troops are paid in the event of a shutdown. The Senate may take further action tonight on the funding bill.
“Once again our country is being brought to the brink by a crisis that we’ve seen coming for months. This gridlock is caused in part because of reliance on deal making instead of legislating. Process may not be interesting, but this impending shutdown is the result of process being hijacked to avoid politically uncomfortable votes,” said Enzi. “In the Senate, the majority has prevented Senate committees from working on the 12 individual appropriations bills and the majority leader has stopped amendments from being considered on the floor. The process that allows for debate and all elected members to have their voices heard has been abandoned and in its place is governing by leadership-driven crises. If committees did their work, we would not be debating a continuing resolution. Every agency would know what it has to spend for the whole next year and spending cuts would be more logical.”
At midnight the continuing resolution that has been funding the federal government expires.
