Our kids deserve to grow up in a world where asking for help is easy and stigma-free.\u201d\n\nWashington, D.C. \u2013 Today, U.S. Senators John Fetterman (D-PA) and Jon Husted (R-OH) introduced a resolution to support the designation of May 4 through May 10, 2025, as Children\u2019s Mental Health Awareness Week.\n\n\u201cAs someone who\u2019s been open about my own mental health journey, I know firsthand that silence can be deadly. Our kids deserve to grow up in a world where asking for help is easy and stigma-free,\u201d said Senator Fetterman. \u201cSuicide is now the second leading cause of death for 10- to 14-year-olds. Senator Husted and I introduced this resolution to send a message loud and clear: asking for help is the bravest thing a person can do, and help is there when they do.\u201d\n\n\u201cNo child should have to shoulder mental health struggles alone,\u201d continued Fetterman. \u201cThis resolution is our way of showing every kid in Pennsylvania and across the country that Congress sees you and we want to be there for you\u2014whether that\u2019s getting more counselors in schools, holding social media giants accountable, or making mental health care more affordable.\u201d\n\n\u201cToo many of Ohio\u2019s children are struggling with mental health challenges. We need to be vigilant in understanding the harmful effects of social media, in supporting strong families and in shaping healthy environments for kids,\u201d said Senator Husted. \u201cOur resolution is a step forward in providing children the guidance they need to become resilient young adults.\u201d\n\nWhy it matters in Pennsylvania:\n\nMore than 15% of Pennsylvania teens (ages 12\u201317) report suffering from at least one major depressive episode during the past year\n\nRoughly 57% of Pennsylvania high school students with major depression do not receive mental health care.\n\nRoughly 18% of Pennsylvania children (ages 3\u201317) have been diagnosed with anxiety, depression, ADHD, or a related condition.\n\nWhat the resolution does:\n\nDesignates May 4\u201310, 2025 as Children\u2019s Mental Health Awareness Week to raise awareness of children\u2019s mental health and the importance of early detection, treatment, intervention and prevention strategies.\n\nUrges Congress, states, and school districts to categorize and treat youth mental health as a top national priority and calls for the continued promotion of mental health in schools and communities.\n\nRecognizes the link between children\u2019s mental health and ample outdoor recreation, a healthy diet, regular socialization with peers and adequate sleep.\n\nSupports local\u2013state\u2013federal partnerships that are already expanding counseling, tele-mental-health, and crisis line access.\n\nCalls on families and communities to take part in awareness week activities that break stigma and connect kids to care.\n\nReaffirms that mental health is health and demands continued efforts to make services affordable and accessible for every child in America.", 1, "2026-03-30T01:40:41Z", "2026-04-06T18:20:29Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.fetterman.senate.gov/fetterman-husted-introduce-resolution-spotlighting-childrens-mental-health-awareness/"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.4622071757912636, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
