Increasing the accessibility of life-saving services will be a key factor in addressing the growing suicide crisis in our nation. That's why I am calling on the House of Representatives to immediately move to take up and pass S. 2661, the NationalSuicideHotline Designation Act. Every day the House of Representatives delays is a missed opportunity to support critical suicide prevention measures and save lives.\r\nS. 2661, which Gardner introduced with U.S. Senators Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Jerry Moran (R-KS), and Jack Reed (D-RI),passed the U.S. Senate unanimouslyon May 13, 2020 andreceived an endorsementfrom every single Federal CommunicationsCommission (FCC) commissioner.\r\nGardner and Baldwinwroteto Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD), and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) in July 2020 urging them to immediately take up and pass the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act. Gardner and Baldwin's letter followed a letter from48 leading mental health groupsto House leadership calling for swift passage of S. 2661, where they wrote, This bicameral, bipartisan legislation is urgently needed and, under your leadership, could save lives.\r\nU.S. Representatives Chris Stewart (R-UT) and Seth Moulton (D-MA) are leading companion legislation to S. 2661 in the U.S. House of Representatives.\r\nSenator Gardner has made it a priority to address rising suicide rates in Colorado and across the nation:\r\n \r\nOn average, Colorado loses someone every seven hours to suicide.\r\nIn July 2020, Gardner and U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) introduced theCrisis Care Improvement and Suicide Prevention Actto support crisis care centers and save lives.\r\nGardner is leading efforts todesignate 9-8-8 as the national suicide prevention hotlineso it's easier for Americans in a mental health crisis to receive help. On May 13, the Senateunanimously passedGardner's NationalSuicideHotline Designation Act.\r\nIn April 2020, Gardner and a bipartisan group of Senate colleagues wrote to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer calling foran increase critical funds for suicide preventionamid the COVID-19 pandemic.\r\nGardner introduced the bipartisan, bicameralEffective Suicide Screening and Assessment in the Emergency Department Actin December 2019 to improve suicide screening and prevention practices in hospital emergency departments with a focus on increasing identification, assessment, and treatment of patients who are at risk forsuicide.\r\nIn September 2019, Gardner introduced theSuicide Training and Awareness Nationally Delivered for Universal Prevention (STANDUP) Actwith Senator Doug Jones (D-AL), which is supported by Sandy Hook Promise and requires states and public schools to implement evidence-based policies to prevent suicides in order to receive Project AWARE grants.\r\nGardner introduced theMental Health Professionals Workforce Shortage Loan Repayment Actin September 2019 with Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA), which authorizes new loan repayment options for mental health professionals who agree to practice in an area with a shortage.                           \r\n \r\n###\r\nCory Gardner is a member of the U.S. Senate serving Colorado.
