When more than two-thirds of Americans and nearly half of the president’s own party can see his clear conflict of interest, this is no longer a partisan question. It’s a basic test of whether public office is still supposed to serve the public.

“We can pass smart, clear rules for digital assets and shut down presidential self-dealing at the same time. There must be an enforceable ban, and any market structure bill that leaves enforcement solely in the hands of the president’s own Justice Department and allows him to profit from crypto isn’t a reform. It’s a permission slip.

“I will not vote to hand this president, or any president, a taxpayer-backed license to get rich off the office.”

Senator Gillibrand has long argued that Congress cannot write the rules of the road for a trillion-dollar industry while leaving the most obvious conflict of interest untouched. As the Senate considers market structure legislation, she is pressing colleagues on both sides of the aisle to close the loophole that lets a sitting president issue a coin, drive up its value with the megaphone of his office, and pocket the proceeds.

In July, Gillibrand called on Senate leadership to ensure that a prohibition on public officials issuing, sponsoring, or profiting from crypto tokens is included in any market structure package.

The Reuters survey of 1,166 adults, conducted August 14–17, found that 63% of Americans believe it is inappropriate for President Trump to have profited from cryptocurrency since his return to power, while just 32% said it was appropriate.

Nearly seven in ten Americans — including 48% of Republicans — said they believe the president allows his private business interests to influence his decisions in office.

###", 1, "2026-08-24T05:37:30Z", "2026-08-24T05:38:35Z
url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at
url
https://www.gillibrand.senate.gov/news/press/release/new-poll-makes-clear-market-structure-legislation-must-have-enforceable-ban-on-president-trump-issuing-and-profiting-from-crypto/
