U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp announced $875,232 in federal funding to the North Dakota Department of Health to help bring an end to domestic violence by strengthening the criminal justice system for victims and making sure services are in place to help women recover.\r\nDomestic violence continues to plague too many people in North Dakota and across the country, said Heitkamp. Since my work to combat domestic violence in the 1990s as North Dakota's Attorney General, I've vowed to never stop fighting to protect victims and end this violence once and for all. The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), which authorizes these federal funds to help strengthen law enforcement efforts to combat domestic violence and supports victim services, will soon expire. Congress must come together to renew VAWA and make sure these critical programs and protections are continued.\r\nThese federal funds are made available through the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Violence Against Women's Services, Training, Officers, and Prosecutors (STOP) Violence Against Women Formula Grant Program. This federal program is authorized by the VAWA that Heitkamp worked reauthorize in 2013 and was the first bill she cosponsored in the U.S. Senate. She also worked to implement the first VAWA in the 1990s when she was Attorney General for North Dakota.\r\nHeitkamp and Senator Sullivan (R-AK) recently announced that their bipartisan Pro Bono Work to Empower and Represent (POWER) Act was signed into law. Their bill will help provide access to pro bono legal services and information to victims of domestic and sexual violence victims. For victims of domestic, dating, or sexual violence legal assistance can make the difference as they try to get away and move forward with their lives.", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.heitkamp.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/press-releases?ContentRecord_id=859AD302-0132-4C40-A84C-28B381E5515E"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.8977586403489113, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
