Heitkamp will receive the 2013 ADC Congressional Leadership Award on June 13, 2013.\r\nIn citing the reason for Senator Heitkamp\u2019s selection for the award, the ADC wrote, \u201cSenator Heitkamp has been instrumental in her advocacy to North Dakota\u2019s defense community priorities, which include bringing the next tanker mission to Grand Forks Air Force Base, ensuring that the top leaders at Department of Defense understand clearly that maintaining and modernizing our nuclear triad are national security priorities, so important to Minot and our country,\u201d ADC wrote. \u201cSenator Heitkamp also never misses an opportunity to discuss the proud history of the 119th Happy Hooligans at Fargo National Air Guard Base and our National Guard members with top Air Force and National Guard Leaders.\u201d\r\n\u201cI am just getting started, but I am honored that I will be recognized for my work on behalf of North Dakota servicemembers, their families, and their communities,\u201d said Heitkamp. \u201cOur defense communities face unique challenges and they deserve nothing less than our steadfast commitment to their success.\u201d\r\nSince being sworn in to the Senate, Heitkamp has spent a substantial amount of time advocating for North Dakota\u2019s two air bases and National Guard. She has met with top military officials to educate them on the unique benefits North Dakota\u2019s defense communities provide our military.
