U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp, a member of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, today announced more than $7 million in federal funding to support safety and emergency preparedness programs in North Dakota. Heitkamps Committee has jurisdiction over these funds.\r\nMaking sure North Dakotas families and communities are safe is my top priority, said Heitkamp. With our states growing population and rapidly expanding economy come many rewards for North Dakota, but also a number of potential safety concerns. These grants will be instrumental in helping law enforcement and government agencies address these challenges and give them the resources they need to protect North Dakotans.\r\nThe grants are distributed as follows:\r\n \r\nState Homeland Security Program  $3,733,000. The funds will be used to help implement State homeland security strategies to prevent, protect against, mitigate, respond to, and recover from acts of terrorism or other catastrophic events.\r\n \r\n \r\nOperation Stonegarden  $433,149. The funds will be used to improve coordination between local, tribal, territorial, State, and Federal law enforcement agencies to help secure the northern U.S. border.\r\n \r\n \r\nEmergency Management Performance Grant Program  $3,099,556. The funds will be used to assist State, local, and tribal governments in emergency preparedness and the protection of life and property.\r\n \r\nLast week, Heitkamp pressed U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Deputy Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Gil Kerlikowske for additional needed resources and personnel on the northern U.S. border in North Dakota.\r\nIn June, Heitkamp visited North Dakotas northern border with Senator Tom Carper (D-DE), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, to speak firsthand with local officials about security challenges they face as the states population has boomed.\r\nThe funding is made available through DHSs Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), under the Fiscal Year 2014 state and local preparedness grant programs.\r\n###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.heitkamp.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/press-releases?ID=47f7d424-4aa1-4bd6-a459-9c3273c25282"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 2.4768030270934105, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
