{"database": "press", "table": "releases", "rows": [["https://www.heitkamp.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/press-releases?ID=60E5DF68-F37D-4FEC-A860-AB96EE62B388", "Heitkamp Announces $271,000 in Federal Funding for UND Research in Antarctica", "2016-11-04", "2016", "2016-11", "Democrat", "House", "ND", "Heidi Heitkamp", "H001069", "www.heitkamp.senate.gov", null, null, "legacy", "PORTAL, N.D. \u2013 U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today announced more than $271,000 in federal funding through the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support University of North Dakota geology research in Antarctica.\r\n\u201cNorth Dakota winters must not have been cold enough for these UND students and researchers, who have been awarded a federal grant to head to Antarctica and investigate some of the oldest ice in the world,\u201d said Heitkamp. \u201cThis is a great example of how students, faculty, and staff at our state\u2019s universities are leading the world in cutting-edge research that creates new discoveries \u2013 teaching us more about the world, and leading to innovations and economic growth.\u201d\r\nThe NSF award supports UND research that will study a large body of ice buried beneath a meter of debris in East Antarctica.\u00a0Several students will participate in the project by conducting Antarctic field work, making measurements in the lab, attending meetings, participating in outreach activities, and producing videos.\r\nEarly analyses of the ice suggest it could be over a million years old, making it some of the oldest in the world. Further research could help scientists better understand the processes involved in its survival for such long periods of time.
