{"database": "press", "table": "releases", "rows": [["https://www.heller.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/videos?ContentRecord_id=3227cd64-2680-4160-940e-d55f48c25f72", "Heller Speaks about Rebuilding American Manufacturing", "2013-12-11", "2013", "2013-12", "Republican", "House", "NV", "Dean Heller", "H001041", "www.heller.senate.gov", null, null, "legacy", "(Washington, D.C.) \u2013 U.S. Senator Dean Heller (R-NV), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Subcommittee on Economic Policy, today delivered the following remarks during a hearing entitled \u201cRebuilding American Manufacturing.\u201d\r\nRemarks as prepared:\r\nThank you Chairman Merkley for holding this hearing today.\u00a0 I\u2019m pleased that our sub-committee continues to focus on jobs and the middle class.\u00a0 For too long, job creation has received second-class treatment by Congress.\u00a0 With Nevada continuing to lead the country in unemployment, Congress must develop policies that spur job growth \u2013 especially in industries like manufacturing.\r\nManufacturing is critical to the American economy, and its continued strength is key to putting Americans back to work.\u00a0 While Washington hesitates to act, America\u2019s manufacturers are shutting down and jobs are being lost.\u00a0\r\nWhile Nevada is known for travel, gaming, and mining \u2013 manufacturing represents an important segment of our economy by employing more than 56,000 workers at 1,800 manufacturing companies.\u00a0 I would also note that the average wage for manufacturing employee in Nevada is over $52,000 a year which is ten thousand dollars more than the average salary in the state.\r\nUnfortunately, Nevada manufacturers are continuing to struggle in this recession.\u00a0 Just a few months ago, a headline in my hometown newspaper, the Nevada Appeal, read: \u201cManufacturing Sector Rebound Likely Isn\u2019t Near.\u201d The article went on to highlight that Nevada has lost 10,000 manufacturing jobs in this recession and has only regained 1,000.\u00a0\u00a0 By industry sector, that is the second-largest job loss in the state.\u00a0\r\nWhile it cannot be done overnight, it is my hope that Washington can get serious and implement an agenda to strengthen American manufacturing and create American jobs.\r\nI believe that the key to ensuring Americans continue to have access to high quality manufacturing jobs is not to enact burdensome regulations or a protectionist agenda, but to expand economic freedom.\u00a0 This goal can be accomplished by simplifying our tax code so that businesses are encouraged to locate and remain in the U.S., by ensuring that we are effectively educating our children, and by supporting policies that foster fair competition and open access.\u00a0\r\nAs a nation, we must engage the realities of this growing global and technological economy, and Congress must develop policies that ensure the U.S. remains at the forefront of these changing dynamics and create jobs here in America.\r\nThank you Mr. Chairman, and I look forward to hearing all of the testimonies from our witnesses.", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.heller.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/videos?ContentRecord_id=3227cd64-2680-4160-940e-d55f48c25f72"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.4304476790130138, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
