Hirono announced that the Hawaii Department of Education will receive $1.56 million in federal funding to improve academic achievement at schools throughout the state. The U.S. Department of Education funding will be allocated among Hawaii\u2019s priority status schools to provide students and teachers with additional resources to improve performance in the classroom.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\r\n\u201cThis funding ensures that Hawaii\u2019s public schools will continue to have the necessary resources to help all students succeed,\u201d said Senator Hirono.\r\n\u201cProviding the additional supports to schools that need it most is key to their success,\u201d said Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen the impact extended learning opportunities and professional development for teachers have made. In order to make improvements, we need to provide schools resources. This grant allows us the opportunity to move forward.\u201d\r\nThe funding will be awarded through the U.S. Department of Education\u2019s School Improvement Grants (SIGs) program, which supports state and local educational agencies that demonstrate the greatest need for funds and the strongest commitment to improving student achievement.
