Mr. President, over the past week, Americans were\n\nhit once again with a grave inflation report. Worse, the American\n\npeople got more evidence of just how out of touch the White House and\n\ncongressional Democrats are with the damage inflation is doing to\n\nfamilies across the country.\n\nWe were all hoping President Biden's crushing inflation might show\n\nsigns of easing and give folks a chance to catch their breath after\n\nmonths and months of watching their paychecks shrink. That is not what\n\nhappened at all. Inflation is up 8.3 percent from a year ago--a\n\ndisastrous number.\n\nWe are feeling the inflation in every aspect of our lives, from\n\npaying utility bills to gassing up cars, to rent and insurance, and,\n\nespecially, to the basics like food. Grocery prices are up 13.5 percent\n\nfrom this time last year, which is a crushing blow to most Americans\n\nwho visit their local store once a week, like I do. Milk is up 17\n\npercent. Bread and chicken are up 16 percent. Eggs are up an outrageous\n\n40 percent. And the list goes on and on.\n\nI do my own shopping for my family, and I see this weekly, and it is\n\nincredible. This is a reality, but President Biden appears to be living\n\nin a very, very different reality. When the latest bad inflation\n\nnumbers were released last week, the President and Washington Democrats\n\nthrew a party on the White House lawn. That is right, a party--a lawn\n\nparty. The President and Democrats celebrated as the rest of us watched\n\nthe Dow plummet and received an inflation report confirming that this\n\nis the worst year for food and electricity inflation since the fallout\n\nfrom President Jimmy Carter.\n\nWhat exactly did they celebrate? Their latest reckless, Big\n\nGovernment spending bill.\n\nI don't have to remind you that, just over a year ago, the Democrats\n\nrammed through their $2 trillion spending spree despite economists\n\nwarning that it would be a catalyst for rampant inflation. Economists\n\nwarned us then, and they are warning us now, about the misnamed\n\nInflation Reduction Act; namely, that it won't do anything to ease\n\ninflation, but it will certainly add to the deficit.\n\nApparently, hosting a big party is preferable than heeding these\n\nnonpartisan warnings and getting to work to get our Nation back on the\n\nright track.\n\nWhen the \"Inflation Act\" was on the floor, Republicans tried\n\ncountless times to adopt solutions to tackle inflation, crime, and\n\nsecure our border. But our efforts were consistently shut down because\n\nnot one Senate Democrat could spare a penny from the Green New Deal.\n\nNo, they have their own priorities, and they are awfully out of touch\n\nwith the priorities of American families.\n\nOn Sunday, we were given more evidence that the President is living\n\nin a completely different world than the rest of us. The President\n\nappeared on \"60 Minutes,\" where he discussed several challenges\n\ncurrently facing our Nation, only, according to him, our Nation is\n\ndoing swell. And indeed, the President seemed to paint a rosy picture\n\nof little to no inflation and suggested we should be relieved by the\n\nnew inflation numbers.\n\nWhen asked what he could do better and faster to help Americans get\n\nsome relief at the grocery store checkout line, he claimed inflation\n\nwas up \"hardly at all.\"\n\n\"Hardly at all?\" Say that to parents paying 40 percent more for a\n\ndozen of eggs just to feed their children breakfast. Say that to\n\nworkers who are watching their savings dwindle month after month\n\nbecause their paychecks can't keep up with these prices. Say that to\n\nthe Americans who are just barely getting by in this economy.\n\nPresident Biden, you may not have to visit the grocery store or pay\n\nan electricity bill, but my constituents do.\n\nTime and time again, the President and his allies in Congress have\n\nproven he is out of touch with American priorities and in denial about\n\nthe real suffering and fears of the American people. They are right to\n\nquestion whether they can still afford the leadership they are getting\n\nout of the White House and the Democrat-led Congress.\n\nIt is high time for the President and Democrats to align their\n\npriorities with those of the people, allow real solutions to be\n\nconsidered on the Senate floor, and get out our economy back on its\n\nfeet.", 1, "2026-03-30T01:40:41Z", "2026-04-08T03:08:33Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.hydesmith.senate.gov/inflation-0"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.4250404201447964, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
