Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), today voted for H.R. 34, the 21st Century Cures Act, which provides $4.8 billion in new funding to the National Institute of Health (NIH), \u00a0increased funding for Alzheimer\u2019s and cancer research and provides $1 billion in grants to states to fight the opioid abuse epidemic. The funding is fully offset. This bill passed the Senate by a vote of 94-5.\r\n\u201cThe 21st Century Cures Act is an important piece of legislation that addresses the opioid epidemic devastating Oklahoma and the country as a whole, as well as advancing medical research for illnesses like Alzheimer\u2019s, cancer and rare pediatric diseases\u00a0\u201d Inhofe said. \u201cThis bipartisan bill will lead to lifesaving medical breakthroughs that will benefit all Oklahomans. The passage of this legislation creates new hope among doctors, researchers, and patients alike in its effort to spur advancements in biomedical research.\u201d\r\n\u00a0\u201cThis increase in funding to the NIH will provide a major shot in the arm for medical research across the United States. By bolstering support for initiatives ranging from Alzheimer\u2019s to cancer, promising projects that otherwise might have gone unexplored will now be undertaken.
