Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee,\r\nmade the following statement on plans to withdraw U.S. forces from Afghanistan\r\nand Iraq: I\r\nhave been assured by Acting Secretary of Defense Miller and the president's\r\nnational security adviser, Ambassador O'Brien, that they are consulting with\r\nour allies, and that, with their plan, we will be able to carry out our mission\r\nof protecting the American people from terrorist attacks originating in\r\nAfghanistan, safeguarding Afghan gains and supporting our partners and\r\nallies. In this plan, we stand with the Afghan people and against the\r\nincreased violence of the Taliban against the elected government. I look\r\nforward to receiving detailed briefings on the plan from the Pentagon and the\r\ncommander on the ground, General Miller. As we evaluate the situation in\r\nAfghanistan and coordinate with our allies, we must ensure that our strategy\r\nand posture reflect the conditions on the ground. President\r\nTrump's South Asia strategy has been extremely successful, and his\r\nadministration has scored major counterterrorism wins across the region,\r\nincluding taking out terrorist henchmen al-Baghdadi, Soleimani, and al-Rimi.\r\nHis military strategy has always reflected conditions on the ground, rather than\r\nbeing tied to an arbitrary calendar like his predecessor.
