The tariffs were initially imposed in response\r\nto a complaint to the U.S. Department of Commerce made by a hedge fund-owned\r\npaper manufacturer, North Pacific Paper Company (NORPAC), in Washington State,\r\nthat claimed that Canadian government subsidies allowed their producers to sell\r\nnewsprint at unfairly low prices. This\r\nis a huge win for our local newspapers, which are truly the lifeblood of their\r\ncommunities, said Senator Jones. The vast majority of newsprint used\r\nby America's newspapers is manufactured in Canada, not the United States.\r\nThe Administration's tariffs were going to cost jobs, not save them.\r\nThroughout this year, I have heard from publishers across Alabama that\r\nthe significant cost increase of newsprint caused by these tariffs had placed a\r\nheavy burden on their already tight finances, forcing them to cut service or\r\njobs, or both. I applaud the International Trade Commission for reversing these\r\ntariffs and letting commonsense prevail. In\r\nApril, Senator Joneswrote\r\na letterto U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross calling\r\nfor an end to the tariffs, and he cosponsored\r\nbipartisan legislationto suspend the tariffs while the Commerce\r\nDepartment examined the impacts of the tariffs on the printing and publishing\r\nindustry. Most recently, he\r\ntestified at a hearing of the ITC on this issue on the devastating\r\nconsequences the tariffs would have for newspapers, particularly those that\r\noperate in small or rural communities. Nearly\r\nall of the U.S. paper industry opposed these import taxes, including the\r\nAmerican Forest and Paper Association, because of the threat they posed to\r\ntheir customers. ###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.jones.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/senator-jones-statement-on-decision-by-the-international-trade-commission-to-reverse-harmful-newsprint-tariffs"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.9656040240079165, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
