The bill authorizes a special\r\nresource study to determine how chronic wasting disease (CWD) spreads and could\r\nbe prevented in deer and elk. CWD can affect both wild and domestic herds of\r\ndeer and elk in 25 states. However, state recommendations for preventing the\r\nspread of the disease vary. The bill would give state wildlife agencies and\r\nwildlife experts information to conduct targeted research on how the disease is\r\ntransmitted, determine which areas are most at risk, and develop consistent\r\nadvice for hunters to prevent further spread. As\r\nan avid outdoorsman and hunter, I am deeply troubled by the spread of Chronic\r\nWasting Disease, said Senator Jones. This disease is threatening to\r\nimpact the wildlife population in Alabama just as it has in a number of other\r\nstates throughout the country. That's why it is so vital for the Senate to pass\r\nlegislation that will ultimately give state and local wildlife officials the\r\ntools they need to contain the spread of CWD. Chronic wasting disease has negatively affected white-tailed\r\nand mule deer in Wyoming for decades, said SenatorBarrasso. To\r\nprotect our wildlife populations and our hunters, we need to know more about\r\nhow this disease is spread and which areas are most at risk. Our bill gives\r\nwildlife managers the tools they need to research and identify exactly where\r\nchronic wasting disease is most prominent and how we can better prevent it.\r\nIt's a critical first step to addressing this debilitating disease and keeping\r\nour wildlife herds healthy. The\r\ndeer and elk herds affected by Chronic Wasting Disease are a critical part of\r\nColorado's wildlife heritage and economy, said Senator Bennet. We need\r\nto learn more about containing CWD, and this bipartisan legislation will\r\nprovide the information state wildlife professionals need to align their work\r\nand prevent further spread. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME), John\r\nCornyn (R-TX), Mike Enzi (R-WY), Ron Johnson (R-WI), John Thune (R-SD), Joe\r\nManchin (D-WV), and Roger Wicker (R-MS) cosponsored the legislation. The\r\nChronic Wasting Disease Transmission in Cervidae Study Act addresses\r\nthe needs identified by state wildlife agencies. The bill requires the USDA\r\nsecretary to enter into an arrangement with the National Academies of Sciences\r\nto review current data and best management practices (BMPs) from the CWD Herd\r\nCertification Program and state agencies regarding: 1.\r\nPathways\r\nand mechanisms for CWD transmission 2.\r\nAreas\r\nat risk and geographical patterns of CWD transmission  3.\r\nGaps\r\nin current scientific knowledge regarding transmission to prioritize research\r\nto address gaps  ###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.jones.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/senators-jones-barrasso-and-bennet-introduce-bipartisan-bill-to-tackle-chronic-wasting-disease-"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.4498140662908554, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
