Sadness when I see the mounting number of casualties. Happiness when I heard that my cousin in Cebu escaped the storm. Hope when I see the world community\u2019s outpouring of support. And there are moments of pride. I see the resilience of the people of the Philippines. I see the fundraising efforts spearheaded by local community organizations. And I see our country, the United\u00a0States,\u00a0sending help to an old friend and ally.\u00a0\r\nThe\u00a0U.S.Navy is the reason I grew up in Norfolk. When my family moved to Virginia in 1970, it marked the second time my father was stationed there. Norfolk was his first duty station after joining the Navy in 1955 in the Philippines. The Filipino American community in Hampton Roads is among the\u00a0biggest\u00a0in the country,\u00a0largely because of the Navy.\u00a0\u00a0\r\nWhenever relatives came to visit, the tour of Norfolk often began at the MacArthur Memorial, which features a painting based on the famous World War II photograph of General Douglas MacArthur and Philippine President Sergio\u00a0Osmena\u00a0during the landing on Leyte in 1944.\u00a0\r\nToday, U.S. Navy ships have returned to Leyte \u2013 where the typhoon first hit shore \u2013 to assist with relief efforts across the country.\r\nSenator Kaine and our entire staff across the Commonwealth are committed to supporting Virginians whose families have been impacted by the typhoon.\r\nThere\u00a0is an immediate need for basic food, water and shelter.
