The funding will\r\nhelp Our Katahdin build critical infrastructure, including roads, water, sewer,\r\npower and broadband on the 1,400-acre former Great Northern Paper mill site in\r\nMillinocket. In June, Senators\r\nCollins and King wrote in support of Our Katahdin's grant application,\r\nciting the impact that the significant job losses resulting from the\r\nMillinocket paper mill's closure would have on Maine's rural economy. This funding for an array of\r\nsignificant infrastructure improvements will help Millinocket attract new,\r\ninnovative companies that will create much-needed jobs in the region, said\r\nSenators Collins and King in a joint statement.We welcome this\r\nimportant investment, which will strengthen the community of Millinocket and\r\nlay the foundation for future economic growth. In 2016, Senators Collins and King\r\ncalled on the U.S.\r\nDepartment of Commerce to establish the Economic Development Assessment Team\r\n(EDAT), that would work across federal agencies and industry sectors to\r\ncreate strategies for job growth and economic development in Maine's rural\r\ncommunities. The creation of the EDAT and its subsequent report and\r\nrecommendations led to the EDA providing funding for Our Katahdin's work to\r\nredevelop the former mill site. Our Katahdin, a volunteer based\r\n501(c)3 non-profit that works to promote community and economic development in\r\nthe Katahdin region. Our Katahdin purchased the former paper mill site in early\r\n2017, and intends to develop the site into a multi-tenant industrial park hosting\r\nboth traditional and innovative forest products businesses such as\r\ncross-laminated timber (CLT) manufacturing, biorefining and nanocellulose\r\nproduction. The site has also been of interest to potential tenants in the\r\naquaculture, food production and data center industries.", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.king.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/collins-king-applaud-53-million-investment-for-katahdin-non-profit"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.531836111098528, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
