Now is the time for meaningful action to turn the tide of climate change. Now is the time for a show of force to make a statement to the world that we care. Now is the time for us to join together to ensure that we pass a better world on to our children,\u201d Senator King wrote. \u201c\u2026I do not have to tell you that climate change is already affecting Maine \u2013 whether it is the lobster population moving north or a declining moose population \u2013 Maine is at great risk of losing its character of place. However, as you know, there are many people around the world facing direct threats due to a changing environment. People in Bangladesh, Denmark, and the Maldives risk losing their homes. Millions of people have decreasing access to fertile croplands and drinkable water. Climate change is increasingly destabilizing our world \u2013 our own Department of Defense now recognizes climate change as a \u2018conflict catalyst.\u2019 Fortunately, we now have the tools to turn the tide.\u201d\r\nThe Climate Change Summit, which is being held at the UN Headquarters in New York on September 23rd, will bring together world leaders from government, finance, business, and civil society to galvanize and catalyze climate action.\u00a0 UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has asked these leaders to bring bold announcements and actions to the Summit that will reduce emissions, strengthen climate resilience, and mobilize political will for a meaningful legal agreement in 2015.\r\nFor more information, visit www.un.org/climatechange/summit.\r\nThe complete text of Senator King\u2019s letter is below:\r\n+++\r\nSeptember 19, 2014\r\n\r\nDear Climate March Participants from Maine,\r\nThank you for marching on behalf of everyone in Maine, and around the world, who is already being affected by climate change and who will be affected in years to come.
