U.S. Senators Susan\r\nCollins and Angus King and Representatives Chellie Pingree and Bruce Poliquin\r\nannounced today that Bath Iron Works (BIW) has been awarded four ships, in the\r\namount of $3,904,735,559, over the next five years pursuant to the Navy's multiyear\r\nprocurement contract. The contract includes potential options for\r\nadditional ships, including one that will be awarded in fiscal year 2019.\r\nU.S. Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer called Senators Collins and King and\r\nRepresentative Pingree today to inform them of the award.  We are proud of the hardworking and highly skilled men and\r\nwomen at Bath Iron Works who have earned the reputation that Bath built is\r\nbest built,'said Senators Collins and King and Representatives\r\nPingree and Poliquin in a joint statement. The award of these\r\nfour ships over the next five years, including the potential for additional\r\nships, demonstrates the Navy's recognition of the high-quality destroyers BIW\r\nproduces that are critical to our national security. At a time when\r\nthreats to our nation are increasing, we will continue to push for an\r\naggressive rate of growth for large surface combatants to ensure our nation's\r\nsailors have the resources they need to carry out their national securitymissions. The delegation will work to help ensure that Congress\r\nprovides the necessary funding and statutory authority for the Navy to procure\r\nten DDG-51's and all possible option ships over the next five years. Senator Collins is a senior member of the Senate Defense\r\nAppropriations Subcommittee, Senator King is a member of the Senate Armed\r\nServices Committee, and Representative Pingree is a member of the House\r\nAppropriations Committee. Earlier this month, Senators Collins and King\r\nboth advocated for the passage of the Fiscal Year 2019 Defense Appropriations\r\nbill, which included funding for three Arleigh Burke-class destroyers in fiscal\r\nyear 2019, while also including $250 million in advanced procurement funding\r\nfor an additional destroyer in fiscal year 2020. The legislation passed\r\nthe Senate and House and is headed to the President's desk to be signed into\r\nlaw.", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.king.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/sens-collins-king-and-reps-pingree-poliquin-announce-contract-award-to-build-four-destroyers-at-bath-iron-works"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.4912369661033154, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
