Klobuchar and Franken recommended Luger for the position in July. Luger previously served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, is an experienced litigator, and was commended for his work reviewing the Metro Gang Strike Force.\r\n\u201cAndy Luger is a dedicated public servant whose breadth of experience, strength of character, and commitment to justice make him a well-qualified candidate to serve as Minnesota\u2019s next U.S. Attorney,\u201d Klobuchar said. \u201cThroughout his career he has proven to be a tireless advocate for the people of our state and I\u2019m proud that President Obama has nominated him to this distinguished post.\u201d\r\n\"I\u2019m very pleased that the President has chosen to nominate Andy Luger,\" said Sen. Franken. \"Andy's invaluable experience serving in both the public and private sectors make him an exceptional candidate for the job. I believe the legal experience and know-how that Andy brings to the table will greatly benefit Minnesotans. \u00a0I have no doubt he'll make an outstanding U.S. Attorney.\"\r\nIn 2009, Luger was appointed by former Commissioner of Public Safety Michael Campion to lead the investigation of the Metro Gang Strike Force and uncovered a series of problems with the unit; he recommended the unit be permanently disbanded, and it was subsequently abolished. A Star Tribune editorial said that Luger\u2019s review of the Strike Force made \u201csmart recommendations about the Twin Cities\u2019 next-generation gang-fighting strategy\u201d and that his report included \u201cwelcome measures to begin the long process of rebuilding the public\u2019s trust.\u201dIn 2008, Luger was also appointed by St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman to co-chair the review of law enforcement\u2019s treatment of the protestors during the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul. In 2012, Luger was appointed by Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak to review the city\u2019s youth violence prevention program, and is currently chair of the Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board.\r\nLuger is currently a partner at the Greene Espel law firm and has been selected as one of Minnesota\u2019s Top 100 \u201cSuper Lawyers\u201d for the past ten years. He has been listed as one of the \u201cBest Lawyers in America\u201d for the past four years. Prior to his time at Greene Espel, Luger served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Minnesota and New York for seven years. Luger successfully prosecuted organized crime, drug and white collar cases including a $150 million national real estate and investment fraud case, which led to one of the longest white collar sentences in the United States and was one of the biggest white collar criminal cases in Minnesota at the time.\r\nLuger is married to Ellen Goldberg Luger, the Executive Director of the General Mills Foundation, and has two children, Stephanie and Josh.
