{"database": "press", "table": "releases", "rows": [["https://www.klobuchar.senate.gov/public/news-releases?ID=ff2b1981-896f-4832-af15-b5a596d04baf", "Klobuchar, Collins Call On Congress To Make Fighting Alzheimer\u2019s Disease An Urgent National Priority", "2013-11-21", "2013", "2013-11", "Democrat", "House", "MN", "Amy Klobuchar", "K000367", "www.klobuchar.senate.gov", null, null, "legacy", "Senators introduce \u00a0bipartisan Resolution calling for a doubling of research funding by 2015, with goal of effective treatments by 2025 \r\n In speeches on the Senate floor, Klobuchar and Collins discussed the groundbreaking work of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester \r\nWashington, DC\u2014Citing the devastating emotional and economic toll that Alzheimer\u2019s disease takes on more than five million Americans and their families, U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Susan Collins (R-ME) unveiled a bipartisan Senate Resolution declaring that the goal of preventing and effectively treating Alzheimer\u2019s by 2025 is an \u201curgent national priority.\u201d The Resolution, which was introduced during Alzheimer\u2019s Disease Awareness Month, recognizes that dramatic increases in research funding are necessary to meet that goal and resolves that the Congress should strive to double the amount of funding the United States spends on Alzheimer\u2019s research in 2015, as well as develop a plan to meet the target of $2 billion a year as recommended by the experts on the federal Alzheimer\u2019s Advisory Council.\r\n\u201cI\u2019ve heard from countless Minnesotans about the pain and struggle of losing a loved one to this devastating disease,\u201d said Klobuchar. \u201cThe emotional and financial toll Alzheimer\u2019s takes on patients, their families, and our health care system is simply staggering and we can and must do more to address it. That\u2019s why we\u2019re making a commitment to tackle Alzheimer\u2019s head-on by investing in research to develop more effective treatments\u2014treatments that one day may lead to a cure.\u201d\r\n\u201cLike many families who have experienced the pain of Alzheimer\u2019s, I know that there is no more helpless feeling than to watch the progression of this devastating disease. Alzheimer\u2019s disease is the only cause of death among the top ten in our nation without a way to prevent it, cure it, or even slow its progression,\u201d said Collins. Collins explained that if our nation fails to change the current trajectory of Alzheimer\u2019s disease, our country will not only face a mounting public health crisis, but an economic one as well. Senator Collins added, \u201cAt a time when the cost to Medicare and Medicaid of caring for Alzheimer\u2019s patients is $142 billion a year, we are only spending slightly more than $500 million on Alzheimer\u2019s research.\u00a0 Surely we must do more for Alzheimer\u2019s research given the tremendous human and economic price of this devastating disease.\u201d\r\nThe Resolution has also been endorsed by the Alzheimer\u2019s Association and US Against Alzheimer\u2019s, leading national advocacy groups.\r\nSince 1983, the year that President Reagan declared the month of November as \u201cAlzheimer\u2019s Disease Awareness Month,\u201d the number of Americans who suffer from the disease has more than doubled.\u00a0 Based on current projections, as many as 16 million Americans over the age of 65 will have the disease by 2050.\u00a0 In addition to the human suffering it causes, Alzheimer\u2019s costs the United States more than $200 billion a year.\u00a0 If nothing is done to slow or stop the disease, the Alzheimer\u2019s Association estimates that the disease will cost the United States and astonishing $20 trillion over the next forty years.\r\nFor broadcast-quality video of Senator Klobuchar speaking on the Senate floor about the resolution click here\r\n####", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.klobuchar.senate.gov/public/news-releases?ID=ff2b1981-896f-4832-af15-b5a596d04baf"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.6537181325256824, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
