Purdue Pharma has agreed to pay $8 billion for their involvement\r\nin the opioid epidemic. The\r\nopioid epidemic has ravaged West Virginia and much of America, claiming\r\ninnocent lives and hurting our friends, family and neighbors. Purdue Pharma\r\nproduced and sold opioids knowing they were highly addictive and harmful\r\nwithout caring about the consequences. They lied to the American people for a\r\nprofit. There is no amount of money that can bring back the West Virginians\r\nwhose lives were lost because of Purdue Pharma, said Senator Manchin.\r\nHowever, we can ensure that the settlement is used to address the opioid\r\nepidemic in West Virginia and other states hit hard by this crisis. Purdue\r\nshould be required to pay their settlements in full, and there should not be\r\none dollar going to bonuses for their executives. These settlements will never\r\nheal the hearts of those who lost loved ones, but we can do everything possible\r\nto help those impacted by this terrible epidemic. In\r\nSeptember, Senator Manchin led\r\nfive Senators in urging Judge Robert D. Drain to reject Purdue\r\nPharma's proposal to pay President and CEO Craig Landau a bonus of up to $3.5\r\nmillion. Attorneys General from 24 states have argued that Landau should not\r\ncollect a bonus.According to Purdue's own filings, the incentive payment\r\nplan is similar to the plan the company used during its illegal and deceptive\r\nopioid marketing campaign that accelerated an epidemic that has claimed an\r\nestimated 400,000 lives and generated $35 billion in revenue for Purdue.\r\nSenator Manchin also led\r\neleven Senators last December in sending a letter to Purdue Pharma asking\r\nthem to cancel the reported bonuses.\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\n\t  \n\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t \n\t\t\n\t\t\tPrint\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tEmail\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\tTweet\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\n\t \n\t\n\t\n\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n    \n\t\n\t\n    \n    \n    \n    \t\n    \t\n\t    \t  \n\t\t    \n\t\t    \tNext Article\n\t\t    \n\t\t    \n\t\t    \tPrevious Article", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.manchin.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/manchin-purdue-settlement-should-be-used-to-help-communities-affected-by-opioid-epidemic"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.4262970071285963, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
