The Pentagon was trying to take back $20 million in bonuses that were given to thousands of National Guard service members and veterans when they enlisted.
“Since the beginning of this great nation, the National Guard played a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of Americans. As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and as your former Governor, I believe it is incumbent upon all of us to honor their service and sacrifice both here in West Virginia and those who serve around the globe. Like many of you, I was outraged by reports that members of the California National Guard were having bonuses clawed back because of actions by a few corrupt bureaucrats. I am relieved that Defense Secretary Ash Carter has put a stop to these clawbacks and I will support any legislation, if necessary, that allows the Pentagon to pay back the service members who may have already returned these bonuses.”
###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at
url
https://www.manchin.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/press-releases?ContentRecord_id=80AF8689-04E5-4ECB-A722-2760C5383403
