Markey\r\n(D-Mass.) today issued the following statement after the Federal Trade\r\nCommission (FTC) announced that it is issuing orders to Amazon, ByteDance,\r\nDiscord, Facebook, Reddit, Snap, Twitter, WhatsApp and YouTube, requiring the\r\ncompanies to provide crucial information about their data practices. Exercising\r\nits authority under Section 6(b)of the FTC\r\nAct, the Commission will require these companies to answer questions\r\nspecifically about how their practices affect children and teens' privacy. Social media platforms and video streaming services are daily\r\ndestinations for young people today,said Senator Markey, a member of the\r\nCommerce, Science, and Transportation Committee.Unfortunately, parents and policymakers alike are in the dark\r\nabout how powerful websites and apps are siphoning kids' and teens' personal\r\ninformation, profiling users, and raking in profits while children get hooked\r\non their devices. No comprehensive investigation of these websites would be\r\ncomplete without special attention to children and teens, a uniquely vulnerable\r\npopulation online. I am glad that the FTC heeded my calls to issue these\r\norders, and I thank my bipartisan partners who joined me in advocating for this\r\ninvestigation.In May, Senators\r\nMarkey, Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Bill Cassidy\r\n(R-La.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), and\r\nMarsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) wrote to the Federal Trade\r\nCommission (FTC) urging it to use its authority under the FTC Act to launch an\r\ninvestigation into children's data practices in the digital advertising sector\r\nand educational technology sector.###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.markey.senate.gov/news/press-releases/senator-markey-statement-on-launch-of-ftc-study-into-social-media-platforms-and-video-streaming-services"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 3.3558649010956287, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
