Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., said that a report on whether the CIA tortured al Qaida suspects should be released publicly as a "gut-check moment" to show that Americans hold their government accountable.
But her Missouri counterpart, Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., said late Monday the release would be "unhelpful and unnecessary."
Some, including the head of the House Intelligence Committee, have warned that release of the 480-page report, set in the coming days by Senate Democrats, could incite violent reactions around the world. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., told CNN on Sunday that it was a "terrible idea" and that allied governments around the world and U.S. intelligence said release of the details "will cause violence and death."
Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., who will relinquish that position when Republicans take control in January, is in favor of releasing the report.
McCaskill said this morning that the report "exposes what the world already knows. And that is that is that the United States engaged in torture."
She added: "This report would never happen in North Korea or China or Russia. But in the United States, we hold our government accountable, and I think that process is so important, so fundamental to our democracy, that it is essential that this report comes out."
She said that "if this report doesn't come out, we all need to get comfortable with the fact that in America, the CIA has no oversight."
Other Senate Democrats, including Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., have long called for release of the report. Durbin wrote this letter to the CIA in March after allegations that the CIA had searched Senate Intelligence Committee computers, something that Durbin called potentially unconstitutional.
But Blunt said the report is not "full picture of what happened.
"The release of this report is both unnecessary and unhelpful in our efforts to fight terrorists," he said, in a statement issued by his office.

   Print

   Email

    Tweet", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at
url
https://www.mccaskill.senate.gov/media-center/latest-headlines/mccaskill-release-cia-torture-report
