{"database": "press", "table": "releases", "rows": [["https://www.mccaskill.senate.gov/media-center/latest-headlines/new-mccaskill-bill-to-prevent-emergency-postal-suspensions", "New McCaskill Bill to Prevent Emergency Postal Suspensions", "2016-10-11", "2016", "2016-10", "Democrat", "House", "MO", "Claire McCaskill", "M001170", "www.mccaskill.senate.gov", null, null, "legacy", "New McCaskill Bill to Prevent Emergency Postal Suspensions \r\n                \r\n            \r\n            \r\n                Tuesday, October 11, 2016\r\n            \r\n            \n\t\n\r\n            \r\n            \r\n            \r\n                \r\n                \r\n                \r\n            U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill, along with Republican Senator Jerry Moran of Kansas, has proposed a new bill addressing post office closures.\r\nThe bill would prevent the U.S. Postal Service from using its emergency suspension process to indefinitely close post offices without notice to the community, opportunity to appeal, or a time frame for reopening or permanently closing a facility.\r\nFive St. Louis-area post offices and 34 other Missouri locations would be protected under the new bipartisan legislation.\r\nMcCaskill said in a news release:\r\n\u201cThese post offices are part of the lifeblood of our communities\u2014a source of employment and a lifeline for commerce\u2014and we can\u2019t allow the Postal Service to balance its books on the backs of small communities by shuttering post offices where they\u2019re often most needed, with little transparency or explanation.\u201d\r\nOf the 650 postal facilities that were \u201ctemporarily\u201d closed under emergency suspensions since 2011, 511 remain closed today.
