All 96 senators present found Louisiana District Judge G. Thomas Porteous guilty of having betrayed the legal profession by soliciting cash payments from attorneys with business before his court.\r\nThis was one of four articles of impeachment that had been brought against Porteous by the House. Some senators supported Porteous on the other three articles, with 27 voting in his favor on the one concerning meals, trips and car repairs that he was accused of receiving from a bail bondsman. The senators also voted 94-2 to disqualify him from holding future federal office.\r\n\r\n\r\nSince a quorum is required at all times for impeachment deliberations to proceed, at least half of the Senate\u2019s members sat in the chamber during the lame-duck session for nearly the whole day.\r\n\r\n\r\nAfter the Senate had rendered its verdict, Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), who had chaired the impeachment investigation, said: \u201cThe fact that we set aside everything that we were doing and came together and sat as a Senate and listened to the arguments and deliberated extensively about this impeachment should be reassuring to every American.\u201d\r\nPorteous had been nominated to the bench by President Bill Clinton in 1994. He had been suspended with pay since 2008.\r\nIn a statement, Porteous said, \u201cI am deeply saddened to be removed from office, but I felt it was important not just to me but to the judiciary to take this fight to the Senate\u2026.
