In existence less than one year, the post has grown to 52 members, making it the second largest all-female post in the state of Missouri. Members range in age from 18 to 92.\r\n\r\nEntertainment was provided by the 135th Army Band; Republic High School Air Force JROTC cadets presented the colors.\r\n\r\n\r\nThe presentation of the permanent charter was made by Tom Goodin, past commander, Department of Missouri. The initiation of members and installation of officers was performed by George Scarborough, commander, Department of Missouri.\r\n\r\n\r\nPost officers include: commander Dawn Whitaker, 2nd vice commander Lisa Searles, adjutant Shellie Jones, finance officer Nancy Fazzino, chaplain Brenda Bendon, historian Gayla Atkins, service officer Holly Anthony, and sergeant of arms Jan Lile.\r\n\r\n\r\nProclamations and letters of congratulations were presented by State Representative Lynn Morris, along with representatives from the offices of Senator Roy Blunt, Senator Claire McCaskill, Congressman Billy Long and Mayor Bob Stephens.\r\n\r\n\r\nThe American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nations largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security and continued devotion to our fellow servicemembers and veterans.\r\n\r\n\r\nIn addition to Springfield, female Veteran American Legion posts exist in St. Louis, Kansas City, St. Robert and Columbia.
