U.S. Senators Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) and Sheldon Whitehouse announced that their bipartisan Hemophilia Skilled Nursing Facilities Access Act passed as part of the year-end federal spending and COVID-19 bill. The Act will improve access to critical health care services for individuals with hemophilia provided through Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF) by adding their treatments to the list of services paid for separately by Medicare. Currently, Medicare patients with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders struggle to find skilled nursing facilities that will accept them due to the high cost of clotting factors which can exceed $10,000 a day. The bill was also co-ledby Senator Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.).   I\r\nintroduced this bill because Medicare patients with bleeding disorders should\r\nnot have to worry that the high cost of clotting factors will make it\r\nimpossible to find a skilled nursing facility where they can get the treatments\r\nthey need after hospitalization,said Sen. Menendez. With passage\r\nof the Hemophilia Skilled Nursing Facilities Access Act we will give\r\nindividuals with hemophilia the peace of mind in knowing they'll get the care\r\nthey need, when they need it, and in the most medically appropriate setting.Skilled\r\nnursing facilities provide important care for patients with hemophilia and\r\nother bleeding disorders. Expensive bureaucratic hurdles shouldn't get in\r\nthe way of that care, said Sen. Whitehouse. Adding clotting factor therapies\r\nto the list of services excluded from the Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) per\r\ndiem will give patients with bleeding disorders in New Jersey, and across the\r\ncountry, access to the care they need after being hospitalized. The legislation is co-sponsored by Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska); Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.V.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) There arealmost 15,500SNFs across the U.S.including 364 in New Jersey that provide short-term, intensive, inpatient rehabilitation services to more than 1.35 million people who no longer need to be in a hospital setting but still require health care services.
