{"database": "press", "table": "releases", "rows": [["https://www.merkley.senate.gov/news/press-releases/merkley-statement-on-release-of-alan-gross-from-cuban-custody-and-resetting-us-policy-with-cuba", "Merkley Statement on Release of Alan Gross from Cuban Custody and Resetting U.S. Policy with Cuba", "2014-12-17", "2014", "2014-12", "Democrat", "House", "OR", "Jeff Merkley", "M001176", "www.merkley.senate.gov", null, null, "legacy", "Merkley Statement on Release of Alan Gross from Cuban Custody and Resetting U.S. Policy with Cuba \n\t\n\t\n\tWednesday, December 17, 2014\n\t\n\tPORTLAND, OR\u2014Oregon\u2019s Senator Jeff Merkley issued the following statement today regarding the release of the humanitarian worker Alan Gross after five years of imprisonment in Cuba.\r\n \r\n\u201cI was relieved and pleased to learn of the release of Alan Gross, ending his five-year battle for freedom from Cuban custody.\u00a0 Mr. Gross\u2019 detention was unjust, unfair and tragic and an extraordinary price to pay for his humanitarian work. \u00a0\u00a0\r\n\u201cThis is a tremendous day for Mr. Gross and his family, who remained vigilant and worked tirelessly to end his imprisonment and bring him home.\u00a0 The timing of Mr. Gross\u2019 release during Hanukkah, a holiday commemorating hope in the face of struggle, makes Mr. Gross\u2019 freedom and this holiday even more meaningful and\u00a0joyous.\r\n\u201cToday also marked a big step forward in American efforts to pressure the Cuban regime towards greater individual freedom, respect for personal rights, and expanded economic opportunities.
