Moran, Tester Resolution Honoring Service Dogs Passes the Senate", "2023-09-20", "2023", "2023-09", "Republican", "Senate", "KS", "Jerry Moran", "M000934", "www.moran.senate.gov", "moran", "https://www.moran.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/news-releases", "scraper", "WASHINGTON \u2013 The U.S. Senate unanimously passed a bipartisan resolution led by U.S. Senators Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Jon Tester (D-Mont.) \u2013 ranking member and chairman of the Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee \u2013 marking today, September 20th, as National Service Dog Day in honor of service dogs across the country.\n\n\u201cService dogs provide life-saving assistance, help veterans with disabilities regain their independence and offer companionship and support to our nation\u2019s heroes,\u201d said Sen. Moran. \u201cI appreciate my colleagues unanimously passing this resolution to recognize National Service Dog Day \u2013 a way to raise awareness about the unique training and tasks that service dogs perform to enable veterans with disabilities to live life to the fullest.\u201d\n\n\u201cService dogs play an incredible role in helping our nation\u2019s veterans heal both seen and unseen wounds of war,\u201d said Sen. Tester. \u201cDesignating today in their honor makes sure we\u2019re rightfully honoring these four-legged heroes for the lasting, positive contributions they have had on the lives of so many of America\u2019s bravest, and I\u2019m proud we were able to do so.\u201d\n\nThere are estimated to be thousands of service dogs working across the United States assisting individuals with a wide-range of disabilities and ailments. A service dog is defined as a dog which has been specifically trained to perform tasks for a person suffering from a disability. These can include seeing eye dogs, seizure alert and response dogs for people with epilepsy, and actions to assist individuals suffering from mental health conditions such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).\n\n\u201cService dogs provide invaluable assistance to disabled veterans with the greatest support needs, allowing them to live more independent lives in their communities,\u201d said Paralyzed Veterans of America Associate Executive Director of Government Relations Heather Ansley. \u201cWe appreciate the efforts of Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee Chairman Jon Tester and Ranking Member Jerry Moran to recognize the important contributions these animals make to the everyday lives of people with disabilities.\u201d\n\n\u201cToday is a very memorable and significant day in history as it symbolizes the lifesaving role that Service Dogs play in mitigating the Veteran suicide epidemic in this country,\u201d said K9s For Warriors CEO Carl Cricco. \u201cNational Service Dog Day will help to recognize how invaluable these incredible canines are to our American heroes.
