The senators' resolution follows recent demonstrations by\r\nThailand's pro-democracy movement, which have been met with violence and\r\nrepression by the country's monarchy and government. Joining\r\nMurphy, Menendez and Durbin in introducing the resolution\r\nwereSenatorsBen Cardin (D-Md.), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Chris\r\nCoons (D-Del.), Ed Markey (D-Mass.) Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.),and\r\nTammyDuckworth (D-Ill.). Democracy at home and\r\nabroad leads to more stability and security for all. The Thai government is at\r\na critical point right now in which they must refrain from using violence\r\nagainst pro-democracy protestors. I'm glad to join my colleagues in sending a\r\nclear message to our ally Thailand to respect the will of the people they\r\ngovern and dissuade them from declaring a military coup like they did in 2014,\r\nsaid Murphy. At a time\r\nwhen democracy is under assault from so many quarters it is critical that the\r\nUnited States Senate stand with the democracy movement in Thailand, said\r\nMenendez. Thailand's reformers are not seeking a revolution. They\r\nare simply yearning for democratic changes to their country's political system,\r\nfor freedom of speech and assembly, and for Thailand to be a part of the\r\ncommunity of democratic nations. With this resolution, we are sending a clear\r\nmessage of solidarity and support for freedom of speech and freedom of assembly\r\nin Thailand, and urge all parties not to engage in needless violence or\r\nharassment. The United States need to make clear to the Thai people and the\r\ninternational community that our alliance and long-term partnership with\r\nThailand will continue to be based on shared interests and values, and mutual\r\nrespect for democracy, basic human rights and the rule of law. Thailand\r\nhas been an important American ally one that stepped up to help its Burmese\r\nneighbors in their struggle for democracy. Today the world is watching as\r\nthe Thai people raise their voices to reassert the same democratic aspirations\r\nthat we Americans hold so dear,Durbin said. As the people\r\nof Thailand debate changes to their constitution, their political future should\r\nbe defined through peaceful dialogue, not violence, harassment, or\r\npersecution. In particular, the voices of the many brave Thai students\r\nand youthdeserveattention and respect. As a\r\nThai-American who fought to protect the right to peacefully protest here at\r\nhome, I know that both the long-standing, strong relationship between the U.S.\r\nand Thailand as well as every individual's inalienable democratic rights are\r\ncritically important to uphold and defend, said Duckworth.Thailand\r\nis a strong partner with the U.S.both in terms of our shared national security\r\npriorities and economic relationsand the Thai people have a proud history of\r\ndemocratic reform. I urge Thai leadership to listen to the people and respect\r\nthe democratic principles at the heart of the government they've worked so hard\r\nto form.
