The tax, imposed in 2010 as a last-minute addition to fund Obamacare, has disproportionately hurt small businesses and women entrepreneurs across the country. The bill is cosponsored by Senators Ted Budd (R-NC), Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) and Pete Ricketts (R-NE).\n\n\u201cThis tax was never about public health\u2014it was about squeezing more money out of hardworking Americans to fund a broken government program,\u201d said Dr. Paul. \u201cThe Tan Tax is a perfect example of the federal government picking winners and losers\u2014and in this case, punishing women-owned businesses trying to stay afloat in a tough economy.\u201d\n\nBACKGROUND:\n\nThe so-called \u201cTan Tax\u201d was slipped into the Affordable Care Act as a last-minute replacement for a proposed \u201cBotox tax.\u201d The result? Over 11,000 tanning salons\u2014most of them women-owned\u2014have closed their doors.\n\nAccording to the American Suntanning Association, more than 110,000 jobs, mostly held by women, have been lost. The tax also decimated domestic tanning equipment manufacturers, shifting jobs and production to foreign countries.\n\nDr. Paul has long opposed the Affordable Care Act and has consistently called for the repeal of harmful, overreaching policies like the Tan Tax.
