Portman has consistently discussed the importance of supporting America's craft beverage industry, especially since brew pubs and other craft beverage retail operations have been hit hard by the COVID-19 economic slowdown.\nIn 2017, Portman offered the Senate Finance Committee amendment to include the Craft Beverage Modernization & Tax Reform Act in the tax reform measure, which provided two years of excisetax relief. He's been fighting to make this tax relief permanent ever since, writing a recent op-ed in The Hill and leading a bipartisan letter with 55 of his Senate colleagues urging Leaders McConnell and Schumer to include the measure in a year-end package. Ohio is number six in the country in craft beer production and the industry supports 81,000 jobs in the state.Portman released the following statement:\nThis agreement is good news for our economy and will help ensure that Ohio's craft beverage industry has the relief they need as they work to navigate the unprecedented challenges of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. I fought to include this tax relief in the 2017 tax reform law and it led to more economic growth and job creation as more and more entrepreneurs reinvested more in their businesses and our local communities.
