The amendment gives AFRL, located at Wright Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB), increased authority to hire science, technology, engineering, and math bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degree students directly into the lab.\r\n\u201cI\u2019m glad this provision was included in the conference bill,\u201d said Portman. \u201cWe know we need to be able to attract STEM graduates into AFRL and our other defense labs, and being able to expose them to work at the labs while still students will be an important hiring tool.\u201d\r\nIn last year\u2019s NDAA, Portman introduced and had language accepted into law that expanded AFRL\u2019s ability to hire those with bachelor\u2019s degrees in STEM fields as well as created senior technical managers within the lab. Portman held a hearing on this issue in June 2014 in his Federal Workforce subcommittee and discussed it first-hand with AFRL leadership when visiting WPAFB in August 2014. This latest legislative language will allow the lab to attract promising candidates while still students and hire them in a temporary position with the opportunity for follow-on employment.", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.portman.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/press-releases?ID=0c8cab1b-69de-4743-b38d-9222e8a50b03"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.8312491700053215, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
