We think we need to jumpstart the economy and provide more jobs and more opportunity for the American people.\u201d\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t LOUISVILLE, KY- U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) appeared on ABC\u2019s \u2018This Week\u2019 and CBS\u2019s \u2018Face the Nation\u2019 to discuss Senate passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. The following are excerpts from the interviews:\r\nABC\u2019s \u2018This Week\u2019\r\nOn Middle Class Tax Relief and Jobs\r\n\u201cWe\u2019re doing a lot to keep our jobs from going overseas by making sure the business tax rates are competitive in this global economy. Of course we didn\u2019t leave behind the middle class, either. The average tax-paying family gets a $2,200 tax cut. We double the standard deduction. We increased the child care credit.\u201d\r\n\u201cThis is very much oriented toward not only middle class tax relief but making sure our jobs are still here and there are jobs in the United States rather than somewhere else.\u201d\r\nOn Regular Order\r\n\u201cThere were tons of hearings. Over and over. The Democrats went to them. The Democrats had the opportunity to offer amendments in committee. They had an opportunity to offer amendments on the floor. For example they were complaining about our repealing the Individual Mandate in Obamacare in this bill, but none of them offered an amendment to take it out. They had plenty of opportunity.\u201d\r\n\u201cThey decided it was important to them politically to oppose this tax measure and take that to the American people- and we're prepared to do that because we think this country has been underperforming and we believe this will get the country performing better, providing jobs and opportunity for the vast number of people who\u2019ve been displaced during the Obama years.\u201d\r\nCBS\u2019s \u2018Face the Nation\u2019\r\nOn Tax Reform Jumpstarting our Nation\u2019s Economy\r\n\u201c[Tax reform] coupled with the regulatory relief the administration has been providing are the reasons the economy is beginning to pick up. Consumer confidence is up.\u201d\r\n\u201cThis is designed to get the economy growing again. We didn\u2019t have a single year of three percent growth during all of the Obama years. We were clearly underperforming- and you have to ask the question, why? It was a combination of over-regulation and a lousy tax code.\u201d\r\n\u201cIt was pretty clear during this debate we have a very different view of what America ought to look like.
