Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), Chairman of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, sent a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi raising concerns about potential judicial misconduct against Jim Troupis, a former Dane County, WI Circuit Court judge who faces criminal charges in Wisconsin. The charges are connected to Mr. Troupis\u2019 role as one of President Trump\u2019s attorneys in the state in the 2020 election.\n\nChairman Johnson wrote, \u201cbecause of his role as the president\u2019s attorney [Mr. Troupis\u2019] life has been upended by unceasing political persecutions currently led by Wisconsin\u2019s attorney general.\u201d\n\nAccording to recently unsealed court documents, Mr. Troupis\u2019 attorneys allege that the judge overseeing Mr. Troupis\u2019 case, John Hyland, may have had retired Judge Frank Remington, who is \u201cnot a fan\u201d of Mr. Troupis, write the order denying the motions to dismiss. A forensic linguistic expert reportedly confirmed that it was \u201chighly likely\u201d that Judge Remington wrote the order even though it was signed by Judge Hyland. Mr. Troupis\u2019 legal team requested for the case to be heard by another judge in another Wisconsin county \u201cwhere Troupis did not serve as a judge\u201d in order to \u201censure the appearance of impropriety does not haunt the rest of this case.\u201d Judge Hyland denied this request on Dec. 9, 2025.\n\n\u201cIt is difficult to understand how Judge Hyland can make an impartial decision about [Troupis\u2019 attorneys\u2019] allegations when he is directly implicated,\u201d the chairman wrote.\n\nChairman Johnson called on the Department of Justice (DOJ) to review Judge Troupis\u2019 case \u201cto determine whether any wrongdoing has occurred.\u201d\n\nThe letter to DOJ can be found here.\n\n###", 1, "2026-03-30T01:40:41Z", "2026-04-06T20:09:11Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.ronjohnson.senate.gov/2025/12/sen-johnson-requests-justice-department-review-allegations-of-judicial-misconduct-in-wisconsin-case-involving-a-former-trump-lawyer"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.9139889627695084, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
