Johnson issued this statement following President Obama\u2019s remarks on immigration executive action:\r\n\u201cTonight, President Obama declared a series of immigration actions through executive fiat.\u00a0 He has dictated his own laws \u2014 cutting\u00a0 out the American people and Congress \u2014 and then hypocritically declared he wants to debate the issue in good faith.\u00a0 Even if you agree with some of what he says, that is not how passing good law works. \u00a0 \u00a0\r\n\u201cOver the last two years, President Obama has repeatedly stated that he does not have the constitutional authority to change immigration laws unilaterally.\u00a0 What changed?\u00a0 Certainly not the legality of his actions.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the president has cynically decided that politics trumps legality.\u00a0 \r\n\u201cIt is now up to the new Congress that the American people elected to demonstrate that while the president stands for illegal immigration, we stand for legal immigration.\u00a0 While the president stands for lawlessness, we stand for upholding the rule of law and keeping Americans safe.\u00a0 I have already begun working with my colleagues on a border security and enforcement bill and will work quickly to address this issue next Congress as chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.\u00a0 It is well past time to finally secure our borders.\u201d\r\n###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.ronjohnson.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/press-releases?ID=b5f3d453-f16e-491e-9676-061c97fcee2d"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.8838491048663855, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
