{"database": "press", "table": "releases", "rows": [["https://www.rubio.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/press-releases?ContentRecord_id=c86281a0-f8de-4512-beb3-9311fa699953", "Rubio Joins Colleagues In Opposing Chinese Actions In East China Sea", "2013-12-05", "2013", "2013-12", "Republican", "House", "FL", "Marco Rubio", "R000595", "www.rubio.senate.gov", null, null, "legacy", "Washington, D.C. \u2013\u00a0U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL), Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Bob Corker (R-TN) and Ben Cardin (D-MD) today united in opposition to China\u2019s recent establishment of an Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) over areas of the East China Sea.\r\n   \r\nIn a letter to China\u2019s ambassador to the U.S., the senators condemned the move for violating the sovereignty of territories claimed by Japan and South Korea, while also threatening to destabilize the entire region.\r\n   \r\n\u201cWe are deeply concerned about your government\u2019s recent unilateral announcement of the establishment of an Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ),\u201d the senators wrote. \u201cWe view this unilateral action as an ill-conceived attempt to alter the status quo, increasing the possibility of misunderstanding or miscalculation.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\r\n   \r\n\u201cWe urge your government not to implement this ADIZ as announced, and to refrain from taking similar provocative actions elsewhere in the region,\u201d they added.\u00a0\u201dThere is nothing for China to gain by undermining regional stability and threatening the peace and prosperity that is the shared objective of all Asia-Pacific nations.\u201d\r\n   \r\nA PDF of the letter can be accessed here, and the full text of the letter is below:\r\n      December 5, 2013   The Honorable Cui Tiankai     Embassy of the People\u2019s Republic of China     3505 International Place NW     Washington, D.C. 20008  \r\nDear Ambassador Cui:\r\n   \r\nWe are deeply concerned about your government\u2019s recent unilateral announcement of the establishment of an Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). \u00a0The declaration of this ADIZ is provocative both because it extends over East China Sea territories recognized by the United States as under the administrative control of Japan and overlaps with both the Japanese and Republic of Korea\u2019s ADIZs, and also because the procedures for enforcement of the ADIZ, as announced, are potentially dangerous and undermine regional peace and stability.\r\n \r\nWe view this unilateral action as an ill-conceived attempt to alter the status quo, increasing the possibility of misunderstanding or miscalculation.\u00a0Moreover, this declaration reinforces the perception that China prefers coercion over rule of law mechanisms to address territorial, sovereignty or jurisdictional issues in the Asia-Pacific.\u00a0 It also follows a disturbing trend of increasingly hostile Chinese maritime activities, including repeated incursions by Chinese vessels into the waters and airspace of Japan, the Philippines, Vietnam, and others in the East and South China Seas.\u00a0 These actions threaten freedom of air and maritime navigation, which are vital national interests of the United States.\r\n   \r\nIn addition, we want to stress that China\u2019s declaration of an ADIZ over areas of the East China Sea does not alter the U.S. acknowledgement of Japan\u2019s administrative control over the Senkaku Islands or affect U.S. security commitments to Japan, Korea, and other allies in the Asia-Pacific.\r\n \r\nWe urge your government not to implement this ADIZ as announced, and to refrain from taking similar provocative actions elsewhere in the region.\u00a0 There is nothing for China to gain by undermining regional stability and threatening the peace and prosperity that is the shared objective of all Asia-Pacific nations.\u00a0 We also strongly encourage your government to engage in diplomatic dialogue to address any territorial, sovereignty or jurisdictional issues in the South and East China Seas.\r\n   \r\nSincerely,\r\n   \r\nRobert Menendez\r\n   \r\nBob Corker\r\n   \r\nBenjamin L.
