Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today released the following statement on upcoming talks between President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.\n\nWhen I convened leading American and Chinese scientists at the U.S. Capitol, they warned that the world is woefully unprepared for the threats posed by the rapid and uncontrolled development of artificial intelligence. That is why I welcome the news that the U.S. and China are planning to discuss the risks related to AI this week.\n\nTrump and Xi must seize this moment to make clear that humans, not machines, come first. In my view, this means:\n\nAllowing top scientists to share technical information and develop \u201cAI redlines\u201d about dangerous behavior;\n\nEnsuring that AI models are safe and effective; and\n\nMaking progress towards a treaty to ban superintelligence \u2014 an artificial mind smarter than any human, capable of operating independently beyond our control.\n\nAt the height of the Cold War, Reagan and Gorbachev found a way to negotiate nuclear arms control.
