Ben Sasses first speech on the floor of the U.S. Senate.\r\nIt can be found on his website (www.sasse.senate.gov) and in other places on the Internet.\r\nWed be flabbergasted if almost everyone -- even those who did not vote for him and could never imagine themselves voting for him -- did not find themselves nodding in agreement at some point.\r\nHeres the money graph, as old editors would say, in a mother lode of contenders for the label.\r\nAnd if I can be brutally honest for a moment: Im home basically every weekend, and what I hear -- and what Im sure most of you hear -- is some version of this: A pox on both parties and all your houses. We dont believe politicians are even trying to fix this mess. To the Republicans, to those who claim this new majority is leading the way: Few believe that. To the grandstanders who use this institution as a platform for outside pursuits: Few believe the countrys needs are as important to you as your ambitions. To the Democrats, who did this body harm through nuclear tactics: Few believe bare-knuckled politics are a substitute for principled governing. And does anyone doubt that many on both the right and the left now salivate for more of these radical tactics? The people despise us all.\r\nIf Sasses speech can be faulted, it would be that its better at defining the problem than in prescribing solutions.\r\nBut as the 12-step programs say, the first step is admitting you have a problem.
