The funding, from the Port Infrastructure Development Program, follows Schatz-authored legislation signed into law last year that made it easier for Hawai\u2018i to compete for grant funding through this program. Schatz\u2019s office also worked closely with the Hawai\u2018i Department of Transportation throughout the grant application process.\n\n\u201cAs West Hawai\u2018i continues to grow, its port is critical to keeping goods flowing and its local economy moving,\u201d said Senator Schatz, chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee on Transportation. \u201cThis new funding will help improve Kawaihae Harbor so that residents can continue to get the food and supplies they need, while lowering shipping costs for everyone.\u201d\n\nThe funding will be used to widen the highway adjacent to the port, pave 10 acres in the cargo yard, build a new 80-foot mast lighting to replace lower lighting equipment, install conduit and raised transformer pads for expanded reefer plug-ins, and relocate an office building and a maintenance shed.\n\n###", 1, "2026-03-30T01:40:41Z", "2026-04-08T00:49:26Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.schatz.senate.gov/news/press-releases/schatz-helps-secure-more-than-23-million-to-improve-kawaihae-harbor-on-hawaii-island"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.020168885588646, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
