The documents finalized and released today by the Kishida government have the potential to dramatically transform the U.S.-Japan alliance. Many of us in the U.S. Senate and in successive administrations have been encouraging Tokyo for many years to strengthen its national defense capabilities.\n\n\u201cToday, Japan is taking bold and historic steps forward in this regard. And for the sake of the U.S. and Japan\u2019s national security interests in the region, the peace and security of the entire Indo-Pacific region, and our common interest in combating authoritarian aggression from dictators like Putin and Xi Jinping, today\u2019s bold announcement by Prime Minister Kishida and his government has the potential to secure peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region for decades to come. I\u2019m especially pleased to see the convergence between our assessments of the strategic environment. Tokyo has become increasingly vocal about the Chinese Communist Party\u2019s military threat to Taiwan, and now, in its national security strategy, it calls China what it is \u2013 an \u2018unprecedented and the greatest strategic challenge.\u2019\n\n\u201cIn the months to come, there will be opportunities to bring this extraordinary moment to bear on the alliance.
