John Thune (R-S.D.) today spoke on the Senate floor about President Biden\u2019s disastrous economic policies that led to a historic inflation crisis. Thune noted that Senate Republicans are ready to work with President Trump to advance pro-growth policies that drive economic opportunity and strength.\n\nThune\u2019s remarks below (as delivered):\n\n\u201cMr. President, yesterday President Biden delivered a speech on the economy \u2013 a last attempt to rescue his dismal economic record.\n\n\u201cIncredibly, during the course of the speech he repeated a phrase that he\u2019s often used \u2013 about growing the economy from the bottom up and the middle out.\n\n\u201cI\u2019m not sure how that phrase continues to get past White House fact checkers.\n\n\u201cBecause if there\u2019s one thing that President Biden has failed to do, it\u2019s build an economy from the bottom up and the middle out.\n\n\u201cThanks to President Biden\u2019s signature economic legacy \u2013 an inflation crisis of historic proportions \u2013 today a typical family has to pay an additional $13,375 per year to maintain the same standard of living it enjoyed when the president took office.\n\n\u201c$13,375 per year.\n\n\u201cMore than $1,000 per month.\n\n\u201cAnd who do you think that affects the most?\n\n\u201cNot billionaire Democrat donors or Hollywood stars.\n\n\u201cNo, it affects the bottom and the middle the most: the people who don\u2019t have a spare $13,000 lying around and who\u2019ve had to cut back on extras \u2013 or in many cases on essentials \u2013 to survive in the Biden economy.\n\n\u201cCBS News exit polling in November found that two-thirds of voters described the economy as bad, and 45 percent said their financial situation is worse than it was four years ago.\n\n\u201cAnd, Mr. President, it\u2019s no wonder.\n\n\u201cPresident Biden likes to talk about giving families breathing room.\n\n\u201cBut his economy took away breathing room for a whole lot of Americans.\n\n\u201cWorking Americans paying 22 percent more for groceries and 31 percent more for gas and 28 percent more for electricity and 23 percent more in rent than they were when President Biden took office are not seeing a lot of breathing room for their budgets.\n\n\u201cThe president likes to pretend \u2013 as he did in his speech yesterday \u2013 that he came in and saved the economy after COVID.\n\n\u201cBut the truth is the economy was already well on its way to a healthy recovery.\n\n\u201cAnd his massive, ill-advised, supposed COVID relief legislation helped kick off an inflation crisis whose reverberations are still being felt today in family budgets around the country.\n\n\u201cPresident Biden can give all the speeches he wants touting his economic record.\n\n\u201cBut his economy has been the very opposite of a boon to lower- and middle-income families.\n\n\u201cMr. President, the good news is that the days of President Biden\u2019s disastrous economic policies are numbered.\n\n\u201cIn January, President Trump will take office, and Republicans will have control of the House and the Senate.\n\n\u201cAnd expanding economic opportunity and increasing growth and Americans\u2019 wages will be a top priority.\n\n\u201cAnd that means taking action via reconciliation to preserve the tax relief that Republicans delivered during the first Trump administration \u2013 tax relief that improved take-home pay for millions of hardworking Americans.\n\n\u201cIt also means targeting onerous regulations choking our economy, like the 1,000-plus Biden-Harris regulations that have already cost Americans well over $1.5 trillion.\n\n\u201cAnd it means things like unleashing American energy and restoring American energy dominance, which will benefit both the economy and our national security.\n\n\u201cPresident Biden\u2019s energy policies have jeopardized the future of our already shaky electric grid and set us up for future supply problems.\n\n\u201cBut his war on American energy ends next month.\n\n\u201cAnd a better future is in sight.\n\n\u201cIt won\u2019t take long now, Mr. President.\n\n\u201cMr. President, I yield the floor.\u201d", 1, "2026-03-30T01:40:41Z", "2026-04-06T19:07:19Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.thune.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/press-releases?ID=BBCD9EB2-564B-4110-97DA-2BB053E7BDB3"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.3005838263779879, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
