{"database": "press", "table": "releases", "rows": [["https://www.thune.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/press-releases?ID=C25D1159-406D-4CED-85CF-6922E54A2578", "Thune: Regular Order Is the Path to a Stronger, Safer America", "2025-11-19", "2025", "2025-11", "Republican", "Senate", "SD", "John Thune", "T000250", "www.thune.senate.gov", "thune", "https://www.thune.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/press-releases", "scraper", "Clickhereto watch the video.\n\nWASHINGTON \u2014 U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) today spoke at a press conference with Senate Republican leadership:\n\nThune\u2019s remarks below (as delivered):\n\n\u201cAlthough it was totally unnecessary, the shutdown is over.\n\n\u201cAnd thankfully, after 43 days, we had enough Democrats who concluded that continuing to punish the American people wasn\u2019t the right way to deal with the challenges that face our country.\n\n\u201cAnd so we\u2019re all very pleased that we are out of the shutdown.\n\n\u201cAnd of course, the question now is, what comes next?\n\n\u201cAnd I think, at least here in the Senate, we have a lot of things, as you know, we have to get done.\n\n\u201cThe defense authorization bill, which has passed the Senate, is now being conferenced with the House, and when that conference is complete, we want to get that across the floor of the Senate.\n\n\u201cWe have another nominations package we need to clear before the end of the year.\n\n\u201cAnd of course, we want to get the appropriations process moving again.\n\n\u201cIt got slowed down during the shutdown, unfortunately, and as a consequence of that, we\u2019ve got a lot of ground to make up.\n\n\u201cBut as you all know, we did pass the three appropriations bills \u2026 MilCon-VA, Ag, and Leg Branch.\n\n\u201cSo three of the 12 are now law, and those three we got across the floor of the Senate before August, which is the first time that\u2019s happened since 2018.\n\n\u201cSo, as you all know, we are very committed to regular order on appropriations.\n\n\u201cWe think that\u2019s the best way to fund the government \u2013 rather than having an omnibus bill written in the leader\u2019s office or a year-long CR.\n\n\u201cGoing through a normal appropriations process where the committee marks up bills, has input from all the members on the committee, reports them to the floor, and there\u2019s an open process, transparent process on the floor, we think is the best way to fund the government.\n\n\u201cAnd so, the challenge now is to get the next package ready to go \u2013 starting, we\u2019ve got the defense appropriations bill ready.\n\n\u201cWe tried to move to that during the shutdown, the Democrats blocked it, we want to get on that.\n\n\u201cWe\u2019re also trying to clear four other appropriations bills to put together a minibus that we could act on here in the Senate, so we\u2019re working through those holds.\n\n\u201cBut I would just urge everybody who is interested in actually having the government funded through the traditional appropriations process to try and work constructively to get these bills up on the floor.\n\n\u201cTo let us get on them and have an amendment process, and try and process them in a way that enables us to fund the government through the appropriations process \u2013 as opposed to, as I said, either a continuing resolution or an omnibus or something like that.\n\n\u201cThose are not solutions that are good for the country, and they\u2019re certainly not good for this institution or for the House of Representatives.\n\n\u201cWe want to do it the old-fashioned way.\n\n\u201cSo, that\u2019s what we intend to be working on over the course of the next several weeks, and I\u2019m hopeful we\u2019ll have more progress to report.\u201d", 1, "2026-03-30T01:40:41Z", "2026-04-06T19:52:45Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.thune.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/press-releases?ID=C25D1159-406D-4CED-85CF-6922E54A2578"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.7660328410565853, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
