Tillis has been continued to lead on criminal justice reform at the federal level, and iscurrently workingto build support and pass theFirst Step Actout of Congress. Earlier this week, legislation Tillis co-sponsored protecting victims of child abuse unanimouslypassedthe Senate. The legislation, called theJuvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Reauthorization Act of 2018,takes steps to reduce the unnecessary incarceration of youth, improves safeguards for minors who encounter the justice system and strengthens services that encourage a smooth transition back into society. This bill is a bicameral compromise that blends the previous Senate and House versions. The originalJuvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Actwasenacted in 1974 to ensure the safety of at-risk youth who enter the juvenile justice system, and assist states withdelinquency prevention programs and activities. The program has not been updated since 2002 and is long overdue to be reauthorized. The bill improves the existing law by:\r\n\r\nImproving treatment for juvenile offenders with mental illness and substance abuse issues;\r\nEncouraging states to make efforts to identify, report and reduce racial and ethnic disparities for youth who enter the juvenile justice system;\r\nSupporting alternatives to incarceration, such as problem-solving courts; and\r\nStrengthening oversight of the federal grant program and holding states accountable for failing to meet core grant requirements to protect the safety of minors in the justice system.\r\n\r\nThis bill is expected to be taken up in the House of Representatives on suspension and quickly sent to the President for signature to become law.\r\n###\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\t\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\r\n\t\r\n\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t185 Dirksen Senate Office Building\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWashington, DC 20510\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPhone: (202) 224-6342\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFax: (202) 228-2563\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t9300 Harris Corners Pkwy \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSuite 170 \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCharlotte, NC 28269 \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPhone: (704) 509-9087 \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFax: (704) 509-9162\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1694 E.
