Kellyrequesting a\r\nrigorousinvestigationinto the death ofJakelin Amei Rosmery\r\nCaal Maquin, a 7-year-old girl who diedon December 8, 2018as\r\naresult of dehydration and shockafter she was taken intothe\r\ncustody of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). \"The death of this\r\nchild in CBP custody is profoundly troubling, and points to significant\r\nproblems with Trump Administration policies on children detained at the border\r\nand on the implementation of these policies,\"Senator Warren\r\nwrote.\"I ask that you conduct a rigorous investigation, and\r\npublicly release the results as quickly as possible.\" TheWashingtonPostreportedon December 13, 2018 thatJakelin had been\r\ntraveling fromGuatemala with her father andwas part of a group of\r\n163 migrants who were apprehended by CBP officials on December 6 in a remote\r\npart of the New Mexico desert. However, approximately eight hours after being\r\ntaken into custody and afterJakelinhad passed an initial health\r\nscreening, Jakelin's father notified a CBP agent that she was sick and\r\nvomiting. Her condition quickly deteriorated, and she died on December 8 at\r\nProvidence Children's Hospital in El Paso, Texas. On December 14,\r\n2018,CBP released astatementthatBorder Patrol agents conducted an initial\r\nscreening that \"consisted of an interview and observation of the detainee\r\nto identify any health or safety problems to ensure that they receive necessary\r\nmedical care.\"CBP claimed that the screening failed to reveal any\r\nhealth issues Jakelin was suffering from, despite the fact that she was a mere\r\nhours away from going into shock, cardiac arrest, and liver failure.
