The senator also made the case for government\u2019s role in protecting consumers.\n\u201cWhen was the last time you heard someone call for regulators to go easier on companies that want to use lead paint on our children\u2019s toys or leave the safety switches off toasters?\u201d asked Senator Warren, highlighting the critical work of agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration protecting consumers. \u201cThere are a lot of regulatory successes, and a lot of people are alive today because of the basic rules of the road NCLC and others have fought for.\u00a0 But there are still too many places where the world remains complicated and opaque.\u00a0 There are still too many places where armies of lobbyists are fighting to rig the system so that the public remains in the dark.\u201d\nSenator Warren used the recent debate on gun control as an example of the National Rifle Association and gun industry lobby trying to keep the public in the dark to slow down efforts against gun violence, even as this \u201cepidemic kills our children, our friends, our neighbors.\u201d She also pointed to the Supreme Court\u2019s Citizens United decision, which lets \u201ccorporations spend as much money as they pleased on elections, [and] unleashed a powerful group of millionaires and billionaires who could spend hundreds of millions of dollars to influence outcomes\u2014all in secret.\u201d\nThe senator thanked NCLC for its work on behalf of families all across the country. \u201cWe can take steps to level the playing field,\u201d said the senator. \u201cWe have succeeded in so many critical areas in the past, and I know we will succeed again in the future.\u00a0 Reform isn\u2019t easy, but when we succeed \u2013 when we increase transparency and fight for fairness - we get safer and we get stronger.\u201d\n###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://www.warren.senate.gov?p=press_release&id=280"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.8729439470916986, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
